Hey all. I claimed my OTP (Paul Kariya/Teemu Selanne)
a few weeks ago, and then my life got interesting and I haven't had time to post my introduction until now. So, sorry for the delay. :)
Most people into hockey have heard about Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne. Back in the mid to late '90s, the two of them played together in Anaheim and were a lethal combination on the ice. This video compares them to the Oilers of the '80s.
And, of course, requisite slashy pictures. Hee.
They also had a bunch of great chemistry off the ice, becoming pretty close friends.
Paul is holding one of Teemu's sons here.
After playing about five seasons together in Anaheim, Teemu was traded to the San Jose Sharks (in 2001). *insert sadface*
Two seasons later, Paul led the Ducks all the way to game seven of the Stanley Cup finals, where they lost to New Jersey. *more sadfaces*
The very next season, both as free agents, Paul and Teemu signed with the Colorado Avalanche. Paul took a substantial pay cut (he went from making about $10 million a year to $1.2 million) to be able to play with Teemu again.
Unfortunately, the two were unable to rekindle the on-ice magic from before. Teemu had been suffering for some time from troubles with his left knee, and Paul was injury ridden the entire season. The NHL was locked out the entirety of the next season, and once it the 2005-2006 season started, Paul ended up signing with Nashville, and Teemu back in Anaheim.
Still, with both players in the Western Conference, it was a big deal each of the four times a season they faced each other. Interviews (like the following) were the norm, still asking them to revisit their glory days.
These two guys have been my OTP for ages, but I have never seemed to be able to write about them. I thought joining this community with them as my claim would help me overcome that. I have a lot of ideas about them in my head, but none of it has made its way to paper, so to speak. I hope to use these challenges as a way to develop the relationship I've been imagining between these two forever.
